We had a great couple of days at the Calgary School Chess Championships this weekend.  We finished first in both Divisions 1 and 2 categories and a close-second in Division 3.

Our Div 1 team won easily with the top performer Ben tied for second overall in the individual standings. There was quite a bit of drama in the Div 2 competition as we had a bad start and were only ranked 5th after two rounds. By round 4 we were tied for second and only 1 point behind the top ranked Brentwood. In the last round Anant won his game against a tough opponent, inspiring Corbin and Aiden to win as well. It was then up to Chris, who was in a completely losing position, but managed to turn things around and earn us the first place!

In the Div 3 competition, there was also a lot of drama leading into the last round, but this time it didn’t go our way. In the decisive game Daniel needed to salvage a draw from the reigning Alberta champion Ian Zhao. Despite his best efforts Daniel couldn’t hold on and we finished second by only a half point margin behind Louis Riel. In Division 3 Jeff Wang finished 1st overall in individual standings.

This year we did not field a Div 4 team as most of our Div 4 players were in Reach for the Top.

Below are the participants, with the top 4 in each division making up the team score.

Div 1 top 4: Ben, Nolan, Ishaan K. and Zavier.  Also participated:  Aydin H., Atley, Ishan M., Hazoor, Deven, Millan, Patrick, Luke, Georgia, Scott, Sam, and Aariz.

Div 2 top 4: Anant, Corbin, Aidan J. and Chris.  Also participated: Eesha.

Div 3 top 4: Jeff Wang, Aashish, Aadesh, and Daniel.  Also participated: Arjun C., and Alex K.

Special thanks to coach Vlad Rekhson, whose hard work and endless dedication to the kids is sure paying off.
