Yesterday, May 18, was International Outdoor Classroom Day. Schools all around the world had lessons outside, and the Renert School math teachers also engaged, taking advantage of some beautiful Calgary weather. We headed out with all our Division 1 students for an outside measuring activity. Using metric tapes, students measured how far they can jump, while others measured the time of running various distances around the pond, recording their results. Our Division 2 students measured the backyard, and will compare their results to the actual architectural blueprints, just to appreciate how tough the life of the surveyor can be when your yard is not a perfect rectangle.
Measuring weights, distances and volumes is critical for children’s understanding of the world around them. We encourage parents to incorporate this practice into their child’s daily life.
A safe and relaxing long weekend to all,
The Renert Math Team
